Operation Feet, a determined effort to encourage children to walk or cycle to school instead of relying on their parents' cars, was launched with the slogan "Get off your seat and apply your feet".

The aim of this joint initiative by Dublin City Council, Barnardos and Irish Life is to generate greater public awareness of the benefits of walking and cycling to school in terms of reducing traffic congestion and vehicle pollution.

Research has shown children travel an average of 3,800 miles a year, 80 per cent of the time by car.

The week-long campaign, which starts next Monday, is aimed at parents who drive their children to school as well as teachers and schoolchildren.
