Washington - The US presidential candidates tried to display their humorous sides at the weekend, appearing on one of America's most popular comedy show two days before election day. Mr Gore and Mr Bush taped their appearances on NBC's Saturday Night Live's Presidential Bash 2000 in advance.

Mr Bush, who introduced himself as a son of a former president, ridiculed his own well-documented propensity for mangling words. "When they asked me to help introduce tonight's special I felt, frankly, ambilavent," he joked. "And although I'm a big fan, I've seen some things on the show I thought were, in a word, offensible."

Mr Gore produced one of the trademark sighs he was severely criticised for after his first presidential debate against Mr Bush last month. "I was one of the very first to be offended by material on Saturday Night Live," he said.
