Cannabis worth €2.8 million seized in Dublin

Cannabis with an estimated street value of up to €2.8 million has been seized in Dublin.

Two men, one aged 41 and the other 24, have been arrested.

They are being held separately at Whitehall and Malahide Garda stations under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

The drugs were found after a van and an articulated lorry were searched at a roundabout near the M50 at Cloughran north Dublin. A firearm was also seized.

Gardaí say 400kgs of cannabis was seized with an approxiamte value €2.8 million.

A more accurate estimation of the value will depend on the result of forensic analysis, a spokesman said. Officers from the National Drugs Unit along with the National Surveillance Unit were involved in the operation.

Meanwhile, it emerged this evening that customs officials made two separate cocoaine seizures at Dublin airport.

Officials stopped a 26 year-old man who had arrived from Charleroi, Belgium, last night after he had become suspicious following an interview with him.

The US national was found to have ingested 80 pellets of Cocaine, weighing approximately 0.8 kg, with a street value of about €56,000.

Last week customs officers intercepted a 26 year-old Estonian male also travelling from Brussels.

The man was found to have ingested 60 pellets of Cocaine, containing 0.6 kg, valued at about €42,000.

According to Custom Officials this is the third case of a "swallower" being intercepted at Dublin Airport this year. In total 31.5 kg of cocaine has been seized at Dublin Airport this year to-date.

The two men have been handed over to Gardaí and are awainting trial.
