Nobel prize winner John Hume conceded yesterday that he was not enjoying his retirement.

In Limerick where he was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of Limerick, he said he missed his work in politics along with his friends and colleagues.

Mr Hume was honoured by UL along with former president Mary Robinson, who also received an honorary doctorate. Before the event, Mr Hume said "No" when asked if he was enjoying retirement. "I have to be very honest and I would say to most people that everybody grows with the notion that when they retire they are going to relax, but it's quite the oppposite," he said.

Former Kilkenny hurler Eddie Keher was to be honoured yesterday but was forced to withdraw from the ceremony following a family bereavement.
