Ireland remain hopeful Brian O'Driscoll will be available for Sunday's RBS 6 Nations clash with France following assessment of his hamstring injury.
But the Irish camp will be making contingency plans for the possibility that scrum-half Peter Stringer may miss out with a hairline break to a metacarpal in his right hand.
O'Driscoll limped off in the 75th minute of Sunday's 19-9 victory over Wales in Cardiff with coach Eddie O'Sullivan subsequently saying his skipper was a doubt to face the French.
But the damage is not as extensive as first thought and the 28-year-old will be given until Saturday to prove his fitness for Ireland's Croke Park debut.
A statement read: "A scan yesterday afternoon has confirmed a mild strain to Brian O'Driscoll's right hamstring. The injury is not as serious as first feared and he remains in contention for selection against France.
"He will go through a rehabilitation programme with the team's medical staff this week. A further medical update regarding the injury will be made on Saturday."
Stringer appears more likely to miss the France game with the Munsterman ruled out of training until later in the week. An assessment of his progress will be made on Friday.
Even accounting for his poor display against Wales, Stringer's experience would be missed in what is a crucial showdown with the defending Six Nations champions. Should he fail to make it, Ulster scrum-half Isaac Boss will take the number nine jersey with Eoin Reddan promoted to the bench.
Gordon D'Arcy sustained a groin strain at the Millennium Stadium but Ireland are confident he will be included when the line-up for France is named tomorrow.
Denis Leamy, the Munster number eight, has had an abscess incised and drained and will take part in limited training, but is expected to be fit for the showdown with Les Bleus.
Favourites Ireland made a winning start to their title challenge but it was a far from convincing display in Cardiff and flanker Simon Easterby admits an improvement is needed.
"It was important to score three tries without conceding. Maybe our performance wasn't quite where it was meant to be but we won and that's the most important thing," the Llanelli Scarlet said.
