Persistent rain was substituted by blustery conditions on the third and final day of the Seve Trophy at Druids Glen where Europe, under the guidance of Seve Ballesteros, are chasing a 10-6 points deficit from Colin Montgomerie’s Britain & Ireland side.
The two captains got proceedings underway in the first of ten singles matches with Montgomerie seizing immediate advantage when the Scot converted his birdie putt from the fringe at the first to go one up.
Ballesteros got up and down at the short second, Monty three-putted, to level the match before going one up at the third. Resilient as ever, Ballesteros displayed excellent touch to finish within inches of the hole from the greenside bunker as Monty failed to get up and down.
There are several mouthwatering ties behind the captains, not least the seventh game where Padraig Harrington will take on Jose Maria Olazabal. Both are the form players from each side and given their focus and determination in matchplay situations spectators should be in for a treat
Darren Clarke was level with Thomas Bjorn after three holes in the second match while Miguel Angel Jiminez was one up on Paul Casey after two holes. Paul McGinley will take on Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg in the match behind Harrington
