The Dublin couple who were killed in a car accident along with two other women in Liverpool have been named as Peter and Dympna King, from Aranleigh Mount in Rathfarnham.

The couple, who were on a family visit to Liverpool, were also related through marriage to the two other women who were killed. They were Ms Marcella Murphy, from Ellesmereport and her sister, Ms Barbara George from Sazakerley. Both were in their 60s.

All four were passengers in the same car and were pronounced dead at the scene after the accident on Wednesday night.

Mrs Murphy's husband, Frederick, who was driving the car, a Vauxhall Corsa, suffered minor injuries.

Mr and Mrs King had been in Liverpool to attend a christening. Their daughter is married to Mr and Mrs Murphy's son.

The five were on their way back from a day trip, according to Merseyside Police.

Their car was in collision with a Ford Fiesta at a notorious accident blackspot in the city - the junction of Great Howard Street and Boundary Street.

The driver, a man in his early 20s, was still being treated in the Royal Liverpool hospital for his injuries.

Seven people have been killed in accidents close to the same spot in recent years.

Roadworks were ongoing to straighten a bend to make the junction safer.

Merseyside police have appealed for information from any witnesses to the accident.

Mr and Mrs King were aged 59 and 57 respectively and are survived by their four adult children - three sons and a daughter.

The couple's sons have travelled to Liverpool following the accident.
