The driver of the car and trailer involved in the Selby rail disaster was today charged with causing the death of 10 people by dangerous driving, police said.

Mr Gary Hart (36) from Strubby, Lincolnshire, was released on police bail to appear before Selby Magistrates on May 17th.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Gary Hart, 36, from Lincolnshire has today been charged with causing the death of 10 people by dangerous driving.

"He has been released on police bail to appear before Selby Magistrates on Thursday May 17 2001."

Ten people were killed when a GNER passenger train ploughed into a car on the railway line at Great Heck, near Selby on February 28th this year.

The early morning train was derailed before it went on to collide with a goods train.
