A man who was involved in a high-speed car chase from Kildare to Kilmainham, Dublin, that ended with an Opel Kadett being written off, had gone to Kildare to get help with his drink problem.

David Devoy (27) of St Michael's Estate, Inchicore, Dublin, pleaded guilty in Kilmainham District Court to being a passenger in the stolen car early on the morning of August 15th last.

Garda Jim Treacy said he set up a checkpoint in Kildare to try to stop the car, but the driver drove straight at him and he had to jump out of the way. There was a high-speed chase through Edenderry and Enfield before the car eventually stopped in John's Road, Kilmainham.

Mr Mark Harty said Devoy was a chronic alcoholic who had gone to Kildare to get help from Sr Consilio. He was now off the drink and was married.
