Mr Martin Duffy, a leading Irish pipe band organiser in New York, was killed along with his nine-year-old daughter early on Tuesday morning after carbon monoxide leaked into the family home in the predominantly Irish Woodlawn area of the Bronx.

Mr Duffy's wife, Valerie, was also seriously injured.

His father, Peter, originally from Rockcorry, Co Monaghan, and now living in New York, is waiting to contact other family members before announcing funeral arrangements.

News of the deaths was a deep shock for the Monaghan Pipe Band, which Mr Peter Duffy had founded and which Mr Martin Duffy had helped to run.

Investigators said the accident appeared to be caused by a faulty boiler but said the building had not collected any penalties for unsafe equipment or gas leaks.
