Cardinal Connell's broadside this week against Archbishop Walton Empey has upset many and, in some normally reconciliatory ecclesiastical quarters the gloves are off. On October 8th, the Cardinal wrote an Irishman's Diary for this paper about his love for his native Dublin. "On the day of my appointment as Archbishop," he wrote, "I borrowed St Paul's expression of pride in his native Tarsus by describing myself as a Dubliner 'a citizen of no mean city'.
St Paul, as those who feel the Cardinal needs to be corrected now and again tell Quidnunc, was a native of Tarsus but a citizen of Rome.
