Aston Villa 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2:John Carew salvaged a point for Champions League-chasing Aston Villa after Mick McCarthy's side had threatened to pull of a shock win in the derby meeting at Villa Park.
Wolves, who fell behind to Carew’s early strike, looked set for their first win over Villa for 30 years after Jody Craddock’s equaliser and James Milner’s own goal had put them in front.
But Carew followed up his opener with his 13th goal of the campaign with only seven minutes remaining.
David Jones admitted Wolves were frustrated despite earning a valuable point as they battle relegation.
Jones had a hand in both Wolves goals, delivering the free-kick for Craddock’s equaliser before Milner put through his own goal under pressure from the midfielder.
“We’re coming off disappointed. I think we played well and deserved three points but it wasn’t to be — but before the game you would look at a point to be a good result here,” he said.
“We knew they would come on strong in the second half, they have been really good this season and we knew coming here would be difficult — but to get in such a good position and concede not the best of goals, we’re coming off disappointed.”
On his part in the Wolves goals, he said: “The first was a free-kick, we work on those in training and I was glad that it came off. The second was more of a patient build-up, a good move, I thought I was going to put it in but all that matters was it went in.”
