Athletics:Ireland's Michelle Carey fell agonisingly short of qualification for the women's 400m hurdles semi-final with a fifth-placed finish in heat 3 at the World Championships in Berlin's Olympic Stadium this afternoon.
In a heat that pitted her against Olympic champion Melaine Walker of Jamaica, Carey was steady throughout and he time of 56.91 seconds had her on course for the semis as a fastest loser.
That was until the fifth heat when Germany’s Jonna Tilgner ran 56.73 for fifth, edging the Dubliner out by one place. Walker won the heat in 55.17
Britain’s Eilidh Child and Perri Shakes-Drayton both with third placed finishes.
Poland's Anna Rogowska upset struggling Russian world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva for the second time in a month when she won the gold in the women's pole vault.
Rogowska claimed the title with a clearance of 4.75 metres while a stunned Isinbayeva failed to clear a height.
The Russian had won the last four global titles, claiming gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and 2005 and 2007 world championships as well as a host of European and indoor titles.
She also lost to Rogowska at the London Grand Prix last month and looked sluggish in all three attempts on Monday.
American Chelsea Johnson and Poland's Monika Pyrek shared the silver after both cleared 4.65.
