Hundreds of students from Carlow Institute of Technology are taking to the streets this morning in protest at the increase in third-level registration fees.

The Minister for Education, Mr Dempsey, announced this summer the registration fees would rise by 69 per cent from €396 to €670 each year.

Mr John McArdle, the students' union president, said they were taking the action to show how "angry, upset and annoyed" they were at the increase.

"The students of IT Carlow are fed up to their back teeth of being treated like dirt by the Government and the Minister and will not tolerate it any more," he said.
