Communications company Intellicom is to create 100 new jobs in Carlow with the opening of a new customer services centre.

The jobs at Intellicom's new premises in the IDA Technology Park on the Dublin Road will almost double the Clonmel-based company's employee figures, it said.

Intellicom director Brian Powell said that initially Intellicom will employ 100 people in Carlow within the first three months of operations, and has plans to develop the business further over the next year.

Mr Powell said his main reasons for choosing Carlow over other potential locations in Ireland were the availability of a suitable workforce and the proactive approach by the Carlow Local Authorities to securing employment.

Carlow has two third level Colleges, an available workforce of 250,000 within a 60 km radius and a survey that shows over 6000 residents of Carlow commute outside the County every day to work.

Mr Powell said: "Our growth to date has been very encouraging and we have grown so rapidly that we cannot now meet the demands of our existing clients from our operations in Clonmel, where we currently employ over 100 people.

"We are moving ahead very quickly in Carlow and we are delighted with the support and assistance we have received from the local business community and State agencies, in particular, Carlow County Council, Carlow Enterprise Board, Carlow Chamber of Commerce and the IDA, and very excited about the opportunity of working with the local community."

Intellicom expects that the first senior staff appointments will be confirmed and staff will begin their training programmes by the last week in May.
