The bill of costs for the collapsed Paschal Carmody trial has been served on The Irish Timesand the Irish Examinerby the former GP's legal team, Ennis Circuit Court was told yesterday.

The trial of Mr Carmody at Ennis Circuit Court collapsed on April 28th last after Judge Donagh McDonagh deemed that articles that appeared in the two national newspapers presented a potential risk of the defendant not getting a fair trial. This concerned matters discussed in the absence of the jury.

Mr Carmody (62), Ballycuggeran, Killaloe, Co Clare, had pleaded not guilty to nine charges of obtaining €16,554 by deception or under false pretences from the families of two terminally ill cancer patients at the East Clinic, Killaloe, in 2001-02.

The judge adjourned the issue of costs and the transfer of the trial to Dublin, to be discussed at Ennis Circuit Court, to next Thursday, October 27th.
