Carr sacked as Dublin manager

Tom Carr has been sacked as Dublin manager following a meeting of the County Board at Parnell Park tonight. Carr still had a year of his term to run but tonight’s meeting brought his four year reign to a premature end.

A secret ballot at the County Board’s headquarters to decide Carr’s fate resulted in a split vote - 46 for Carr and 46 against - with one of the 93 delegates abstaining.

Chairman John Bailey then convened a special sitting of the Management Committee who decided to end Carr’s tenure as senior football manager.

Tonight’s meeting was called after last week’s 4-3 vote by the board’s Management Committee against Carr retaining his position.

In the wake of that vote, the Dublin senior football squad yesterday gave their full support for Tom Carr and his management team.

In a statement the panel said: "Given the shambolic nature of the Management Committee of the Dublin County Board's decision not to recommend Tom Carr and his management team for another season in charge we, the Dublin players, feel obliged to respond publicly in a bid to reverse the move and to highlight the lack of integrity in the due process.

"The players' support for Tom Carr and his selectors is total and unequivocal. The effort made by this sideline team on behalf of Dublin football has been monumental. Having taken charge during a transitionary and turbulent period they have now solid foundations in place on which to built and continue the development of the squad. What Dublin football doesn't need at this juncture is an upheaval created by officials in a smoke-filled room."

Former Dublin midfielder Brian Mullins is expected to take over as manager.

Mullins, a manager of Derry in the past and the current director of sport at UCD, has already indicated his interest in the position but said the matter was up to the county board.
