ATHENS - Emergency measures have been taken to combat a heatwave and air pollution in the Greek capital. Private cars have been banned from the city centre until tonight, and people are being urged to stay at home.
With temperatures close to 40 Celsius and an absence of winds, the Environment Ministry has appealed to the public to avoid going outdoors, eat and dress lightly and use a number of state air conditioned buildings, such as indoor stadiums to avoid heatstroke.
