An Post issued its first ever stamps featuring cartoons yesterday with the launch of the Celtic Cats. Drawn by Irish Timescartoonist Martyn Turner, the four images reflect his satirical sense of humour and mischievous slant on contemporary Irish society.
The 55c and 78c stamps were drawn in watercolour and feature a Fat Cat, a Celtic Tigress, their Cool Cat offspring, and a self-satisfied Kilkenny Cat.
Speaking last night, Barney Whelan, head of communications and corporate affairs at An Post, said the Celtic Cat was now part of the zeitgeist of Irish culture.
"The Celtic Cat stamps are a novel, modern twist on two respected and trusted representations of Irish life and culture. An Post is very proud to be part of this new departure in stamp design and to recognise the unique role of the political cartoonist in modern life."
