Cassells to mediate in Corrib gas dispute

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, as today appointed Peter Cassells as mediator in the Corrib gas project dispute.

"Peter Cassells is a very well respected figure in mediation and industrial relations in Ireland. I would like to thank him for agreeing to take on this task and assure him that he will have every cooperation and assistance from me and my Department. I hope that this mediation process will help to reach a solution which will be acceptable to all." Minister Noel Dempsey

Describing Mr Cassells as a "very well respected figure in mediation and industrial relations in Ireland," Mr Dempsey said he hoped this mediation process will "help to reach a solution which will be acceptable to all."

It has been agreed that Mr Cassells will have access to and support from the Mediators Institute Ireland.

Peter Cassells is a former General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions from 1989 to 2001 and one of the main architects of the Social Partnership Agreements.

He is currently chairman of the National Centre for Partnership and Performance.
