NHL review:Cork edged a cracking game of hurling between themselves and All-Ireland champions Kilkenny at Páirc Ui Chaoimh, thanks to two late points from Pat Horgan.
There was little to choose between the two sides throughout, with Richie Power the main dangerman for the Cats, with a personal haul of 1-11 before being sent off late in the game.
Power scored 1-07 in the first half as Kilkenny led by two at the break, with Cork’s goal coming from Paudie O'Sullivan in response to a Cats penalty.
William Egan and Jamie Coughlan kept Cork in touch with Kilkenny and Power after the break before Horgan timed his scores to perfection to move the hosts level on points with the league leaders.
Galway could have joined them on six points but John Mullane was back in a Waterford jersey at Pearse Stadium and inspired their first points of the season.
The veteran forward was instrumental in everything the visitors did, winning frees for Pauric O’Mahony to pop over and setting up a goal for Shane Walsh.
Both sides had men sent off, with Cork’s Declan Connolly following Waterford’s Shane O'Sullivan down the tunnel after each received two yellow cards.
Walsh’s goal had Waterford in the driving seat with 10 minutes remaining but he needed to produce a point at the death after Galway fought back with scores from, Niall Burke, Barry Daly and Brian Flaherty.
