Ireland will shortly resume the export of live cattle to Turkey, according to the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association, which met tlie Minister for Agriculture yesterday.
The ICMSA said Mr Yates promised to meet the Turkish ambassador to discuss Irish cattle exports to Turkey, which were suspended after the BSE scare in Europe in 1989. The farming organisation said it was confident Ireland would be exporting to Turkey "very shortly".
The Department of Agriculture said there were one or two details to finalise with Turkish authorities before exports could resume. The spokesman said the Government did not anticipate any difficulty.
Turkey is one of the smaller markets in the Middle East, but Mr Nicholas Ryan of the ICMSA said export contracts with developing countries were essential to sustain producer prices over the spring months.
Mr Ryan told Mr Yates that export refunds should be restored to the levels before November 17th, 1995.
