TALKS INVOLVING Co Cavan Vocational Education Committee and the Department of Defence have begun on the possible acquisition of the former Army barracks in Cavan town.
The Dún Ui Neill barracks were shut down earlier this year and personnel were transferred to Dundalk and Athlone.
Cavan VEC chief executive Colm McEvoy said yesterday the takeover would depend on an agreement on the value of the premises.
He said the VEC hoped to transform the site into “a further education and training campus”, and if and when it was fully developed it could accommodate up to 1,000 students.
Two years ago Co Monaghan VEC succeeded in acquiring a former Army barracks that had closed in Monaghan town, and work is now under way on a new education complex on that site.
