Bucharest - Romania's late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu paid Carlos the Jackal, the international terrorist, millions of dollars to carry out seven assassinations, Romanian media reported yesterday.

Carlos (Ilich Ramirez Sanchez), who was sentenced in France last month to life in prison for triple murder, spent some of his time on the run in Romania where he had "privileged" contacts with the Romanian secret service, the weekly Ziua said.

According to the journal, in the early 1980s Carlos was paid by Ceausescu to murder Emil Georgescu, the chief editor of Radio Free Europe in Munich. The station was set up by the US to broadcast pro-Western reports into eastern Europe.
