Celtic 4 Juventus 3
Celtic surged to a thrilling 4-3 victory over group E winners Juventus tonight but the result was not enough to prolong their participation in this year's Champions League.
Porto's 1-0 win over Rosenborg Trondheim meant the Scottish club finished third in the group and had to be content with a place in the UEFA Cup third round.
After Alessandro Del Piero's free kick had given Juventus the lead in front of 57,717 spectators at Parkhead, Celtic hit back with headed goals by Joos Valgaeren and Chris Sutton before half-time.
David Trezeguet made it 2-2 for the under-strength Italians but a Henrik Larsson penalty and Sutton's thumping volley put Celtic in control before Trezeguet netted his second.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, whose side were playing in the Champions League for the first time, refused to be downcast.
"Against a top quality side like Juventus I could not have asked for any more," he told ITVSport.
"It was magnificent from start to finish. We went a goal behind came roaring back again and scored four here at Celtic Park.
"I thought the fans were in a for a real treat and they got it."
Celtic finished third with nine points, having won all three home games in the group. Porto grabbed the second qualifying spot for the second group stage with 10 points, one less than Juve who had already qualified.
"We've won all three (home) games in the competition at our first attempt. It wasn't to be, but it's been a terrific effort by all the players," said O'Neill.
