The film censor today began a campaign to raise public awareness of how films are classified.
This follows the introduction of two changes to the film certificate categories earlier this year.
The most significant change was the introduction of 16 certificate for films that are restricted to persons aged 16 and over. The other change was the redesignation of the existing 12PG and 15PG certificates as 12A and 15A.
The campaign plans to distribute one million wallet-sized booklets explaining the certificates to cinemas across the State and with copies of the RTE Guide.
The guide explains the Irish Film Censor Office certs in detail and includes typical examples for each classification.
The existing film censor certificate - which is displayed in cinemas before each film - is to be replaced by a new animated film cert produced by Brown Bag Films.
Film censor John Kelleher recently caused controversy when he classified the latest Harry Potter film as 12A.
