REGIONAL REMEMBRANCES:A NUMBER of regional ceremonies to honour the Irish men and women who lost their lives while serving their country took place for the first time outside the capital yesterday.

In Limerick, the public was invited to attend the Day of Commemoration Ceremony held outside City Hall on Merchant’s Quay.

This year marked the first time regional ceremonies were held, at six locations outside Dublin.

On Merchant’s Quay in Limerick, the Mayor of the City, Cllr Jim Long, laid a wreath in memory of the dead.

Prayers were said by representatives of the Catholic, Jewish, United Presbyterian and Methodist churches in Limerick, and by the Church of Ireland and Islamic communities.

Veterans and their families, as well as a wide section of the community in Limerick, attended the multi-faith commemoration event.

The ceremony in Cork got under way at 11.30am, with a multi-faith service of prayer, after which Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Terry Shannon laid a wreath at the UN plaque on behalf of the people of the city.

Local representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches and the Jewish Community conducted the multi-faith commemoration.

The Barrack Street Band joined by soloist Majella Cullagh provided the musical element.
