Challenge to private waste collection rejected

The High Court yesterday dismissed a challenge by a Green Party councillor

The High Court yesterday dismissed a challenge by a Green Party councillor. Cllr Deirdre de Burca had challenged Wicklow County Council's decision to give private contractors the job of collection and disposal of waste throughout the county.

However, Mr Justice Ó Caoimh said Ms de Burca had highlighted matters of concern in relation to the implementation of EU directives. She had argued that the council had abdicated its statutory duty to collect and dispose of the rubbish in its area.

She sought several orders and declarations, including one directing the council to resume its collection services. Mr Justice Ó Caoimh said the council could engage private collectors.
