Champetre beaten by Lacdoudal

Racing: Lacdoudal rolled back the years to deny Garde Champetre a sixth victory over the Cheltenham cross-country course. The winner's last victory had been in the 2006 Betfred Gold Cup but he was duelling for the lead with Sizing Australia for most of the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase.

With that rival beaten off going to the last, Nina Carberry produced the favourite with his challenge. He briefly threatened to go past on the run-in but Lacdoudal found plenty under Richard Johnson for a courageous victory.

"He ran really well here at the Festival when he came third. He's just a lovely horse, he always tries and he enjoyed that," Johnson said. "He almost jumped the Aintree-type Canal Turn fence too well. He's had a couple of injuries but there aren't many horses keep coming back like he does."

Winning trainer Philip Hobbs added: "It has been hard for him, running with big weights in handicaps. "He's only a little horse but he has been placed many times. I'd say he'll stick to these races and come back in December but the only thing is that he likes decent ground."

Owner Carol Skan, completing a double after Rustarix in the opener, added: "It's the first time we've had a double on the same card and we've had horses for 20 years.

"We've had winners at Aintree and La Landiere won at the Festival, but I think this is the best of the lot."
