A judge has refused to change the bail conditions of a man charged with killing his elderly mother in a nursing home last week.

Gerard Vollrath (46), Tramore, Co Waterford, is charged with the manslaughter of Veronica (Vera) Vollrath (83) at Killure Bridge Nursing Home, between Waterford city and Tramore, on January 9th last. Solicitor Ken Cunningham told the court Mr Vollrath had been subjected to a “media frenzy” since last week, but Judge John Coughlan said the press was entitled to report on the case. “Justice must be in public,” the judge said. “The press are entitled to report. It’s as simple as that. You can quote me on that.” The case was adjourned to Waterford District Court next Tuesday, January 24th.
