London - A radical shake-up of the way GPs, hospitals and health authorities are funded and run was announced yesterday when the government published its Health Bill.
A hi-tech vision of a 21st-century NHS, complete with online prescribing systems and fully computerised doctors' surgeries, was painted by the Health Secretary, Mr Frank Dobson.
From April 1st, the system of GP fundholding will be scrapped and replaced by so-called primary care groups made up of doctors and nurses who will control the way health services are provided in local areas.
