Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is to visit Moscow at the end of July ahead of an expected deal on his country's planned purchase of Russian fighter jets.

President Chavez announced his country's intention last week to buy 24 Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets.

The United States, which has banned sales of US arms to Caracas, has asked Russia to reconsider the sale.

Venezuela's embassy in Moscow confirmed Mr Chavez's plans to visit Russia on July 25th for a two-day visit.

Venezuela, which is the world's fifth biggest oil exporter, has already bought Russian attack and transport helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Mr Chavez, who survived a coup attempt in 2002, claims the United States is planning to topple him and has ordered officers to train for a resistance war against US troops.

Washington dismisses his invasion talk as nationalist bluster from a tyrant who it claims is eroding democracy.
