Ryan McMenamin's personal hearing with the GAA's Central Hearings Committee (CHC) has been scheduled for Thursday.
The Tyrone star is appealing the severity of the six-week ban handed down by the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) after television footage showed him grabbing Kerry’s Paul Galvin in the groin area during a league match in Omagh 10 days ago.
McMenamin accepts a ban is warranted but he and the Tyrone county board were surprised by the length of the suspension, which would see him miss four games - against Galway, Westmeath, Donegal and Derry.
The minimum suspension for a category II offence is four weeks and such a sanction would mean McMenamin would only miss one game.
If the CHC upholds the ban the Tyrone defender could appeal the decision with Central Appeals Committee (CAC).
The sentence is based on video footage. Referee Jimmy White didn’t notice the incident and only issued a black-book ticking to Galvin for feigning injury.
The CCCC was therefore free to investigate and deemed the incident worthy of a six-week ban.
Precedent for an offence of this nature goes back to the summer of 2006 when Donegal defender Paddy Campbell was handed a four-week suspension on the basis of video evidence showing him fouling Derry player Enda Muldoon, who retaliated with a punch of his own which earned him a red card and a subsequent month-long ban.
