Chernobyl boy arrives in Ireland for treatment

A seriously ill six-year-old boy from Belarus has arrived at Shannon Airport for medical treatment that may save his life.

A seriously ill six-year-old boy from Belarus has arrived at Shannon Airport for medical treatment that may save his life.

Nikolai Kutayev will also need extensive plastic surgery. He is to stay with a family in Midleton, Co Cork, while he receives his medical treatment.

The boy, who was brought to Ireland following a plea the Department of Humanitarian Affairs in Belarus, was accompanied by a representative from the Chernobyl Children's Project.

He is being brought to Ireland by the organisation's Long Term Care Programme, which enables children from the "Chernobyl Zone" to travel to Ireland to receive medical treatment not available in their home country.

To date, over 80 children have benefited from the programme.
