Army bomb disposal experts tonight defused a pipe bomb type device discovered by a child at a sports ground in Co Derry.

Army bomb disposal experts tonight defused a pipe bomb type device discovered by a child at a sports ground in Co Derry.

The device was found in Mr Michael Davitt's Gaelic Athletic Club in Swatragh shortly before 5 p.m.

The RUC said a number of items were removed for examination.

Meanwhile in Belfast, component parts of what appeared to be bomb-making equipment, a quantity of ammunition and combat-style clothing were removed by the security forces in Haliday's Road after they were summoned to the area to examine a suspicious object.
