Police officers and forensic scientists have been examining the site of a fatal hit-and-run accident in Co Tyrone. A three-year-old boy was killed and his mother was injured in the incident on Sunday afternoon in the village of Donaghmanagh, near the Tyrone/Derry border.
A white Peugeot 309 car mounted the pavement striking Adam Mullan and his 33-year-old mother as they were walking near Allen Park in the village after visiting relatives.
They were rushed to Altnagelvin hospital a short distance away in Derry where Adam died later on Sunday night.
His mother is still being treated for serious head injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening. Mother and child are from Carlton Drive in Strabane.
The body of a 22-year-old man, understood to be the driver of the car, was later found in a quarry a short distance from the village. Foul play is not suspected in his death.
Insp Ian Harrison said PSNI officers wanted to trace the dead man's movements. "My appeal is to basically anyone who would have seen the movements of a white Peugeot 309 car - KIW 6794 - prior to the accident which occurred shortly after 3 p.m. and was subsequently located shortly after 6 p.m. on Boxing Day," he said. Police officers were shocked at the incident, he said.
Meanwhile, a man was treated in hospital after being injured in another hit-and-run incident in Derry. He was walking along the Strand Road close to its junction with Patrick Street in the early hours of yesterday when he was struck by a white Ford Fiesta.
The man was taken to hospital with a head injury which is not thought to be serious. Police came under attack from people throwing bottles as they investigated the incident, which took place at about 2.45 a.m.
