The Minister for Youth Affairs, Ms Síle de Valera, has introduced a Code of Good Practice for Child Protection for youth workers.
Speaking at the launch in Ennis yesterday, the Minister said a range of issues faced children and young people, especially relating to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
The code was produced in consultation with the National Youth Work Advisory Committee, and draws on the experience of youth organisations, Ms de Valera said.
"It is important that parents, young people and children, as well as youth workers and volunteers, feel that they can continue to participate in youth programmes and activities in their local youth groups, clubs and organisations," the Minister said.
"This code will safeguard the relationships between all those involved in youth work."
She appealed to all those who work in the youth sector to incorporate good practice in child protection into all youth activities and programmes.
The code is a voluntary one.
