The main suspect in the kidnapping of three-year-old Madeleine McCann who went missing from her bed in a Portuguese beach resort last week could be British, local daily Correio da Manhareported today.
The daily said Portuguese police had produced a picture of the suspect based on testimony from dozens of employees and tourists at the Praia da Luz holiday village.
"It is a medium-sized individual with a strong body," an unnamed police source was cited by daily Correio da Manha as saying, adding that the suspect is believed to be British.
Up to 150 Portuguese police officials are searching for the blonde-haired girl and British officials have also travelled to the Algarve to help.
Another paper, Daily Diario de Noticias, said today that the search for Madeleine had been extended to a radius of 10 kilometre around the Praia da Luz village and that the maritime police were looking for a "small bag" or "clothes" at sea.
Madeleine vanished from her bed about 50 metres from where her parents were dining on Thursday. Her parents immediately insisted it was an abduction because there was evidence of a forced entry in the bedroom where she was sleeping.
