Chinese women are still losing the battle for equality with men, with a huge percentage still stuck to the kitchen sink, according to a new nationwide survey.

Eighty-five per cent of all housework in China is undertaken by women, while two-thirds of people believe that men are more able than women, the survey on women's social status, carried out by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), reveals.

In pay and employment opportunities, women are also losing out. The survey shows that the income gap between men and women has increased in the last 10 years, with China's urban women making only 62.7 per cent of what men make, compared to 70.1 per cent in 1990.
