The number of people killed on roads over the Christmas and New Year period has risen by 13 to 37 compared to the similar period last year.
Last week, week five of the road safety campaign, there was an increase of 25 per cent in drink driving arrests.
Overall there was an 8 per cent increase for the camapign to date according to the gardaí.
The figures showed that 1,974 people in the first five-week period of the campaign have been breath tested for alcohol compared to 1,794 for the same period in 2004.
