Church services from dawn to dusk

The religious festival of Easter is being marked by ceremonies and diocesan events throughout Ireland.

As well as the traditional church observances for Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Sunday, there will also be Easter Day sunrise services, many of which will be ecumenical.

The dawn services will take place at 6 a.m., including an ecumenical service at Howth Summit, a gathering of church members of different traditions at Killiney Hill, and others at Sandymount Strand, Leadmines Chimney, Minehill, and St Doulagh's Church, Balgriffin.

The Primate of All-Ireland, the Most Rev Sean Brady, Archbishop of Armagh, will be the chief celebrant at the ceremonies today in St Patrick's Church, Dundalk, and he will also celebrate the Vigil Mass in St Malachy's Church, Armagh, on Holy Saturday at 9 p.m..

Today, at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Dublin, today there will be the Stations of the Cross in mime and music at noon. At 3 p.m. there will be the Solemn Celebration of the Lord's Passion and at 9 p.m., prayer around the Cross for young adults.

Cardinal Desmond Connell, Archbishop of Dublin, will be the principle celebrant at the Easter Vigil at 9.30 p.m tomorrow and at Mass at 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Today a Way of the Cross in the Phoenix Park will start from the Wellington Monument at 3 p.m. and end at the Papal Cross.

In the diocese of Cork and Ross, the Celebration of the Lord's Passion will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 at 3 p.m. today from St Vincent's Church, Sunday's Well, Cork. Hundreds of similar ceremonies will be taking place in every Roman Catholic diocese.

The Church of Ireland Primate, Dr Robin Eames, will today be at St Mark's Parish Church, Armagh, for the Easter Vigil from noon to 3 p.m.. He will then give a talk at the conclusion of the services at St Mary's, Portadown, at 8 p.m.. On Easter Day, Dr Eames will celebrate Holy Communion at the Argory Estate, Co Armagh, at 6 a.m.. Then, at 11 a.m. he will be celebrant and preacher at St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh.

The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Rev John Neill, will preach at the Festival Eucharist in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, on Easter Sunday at 11 a.m..

The Dean of St Patrick's, the Rev Robert McCarthy, will preach at the Festival Eucharist at the cathedral at 11.15 a.m..

Today, at Christ Church Cathedral, there will be choral evensong and the Proclamation of the Cross at 3.30 p.m., in addition to Morning Prayer at 10 a.m. and the Liturgy of the Day at 12.45 p.m..

At St Patrick's Cathedral, the Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Rev J. M. Wharton, will give the address at choral matins today at 11.15 a.m. and at 2 p.m..

The Rector of St Ann's and St Stephen's, Canon Tom Haskinswill, be the speaker at the annual Three Hours Service in St Ann's Church, Dawson Street, Dublin, today from noon to 3 p.m..

A service will be held at the Unitarian Church on St Stephen's Green, Dublin, at noon today when the names of those who lost their lives in the Northern Ireland conflict will be read out.
