THE Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in Ireland yesterday welcomed the decision of the Irish and British governments to proceed with all party talks on June 10th.

The Council on Social Responsibility of the Methodist Church encouraged all parties - to enter the intensive consultations in a Christian spirit of openness.

"It is clearly evident that there is a tremendous desire for peace and dialogue. The political parties will not be easily forgiven if they squander the opportunity now presented to them. The council reiterates its call to the IRA to reinstate its ceasefire. They are encouraged to respond positively and imaginatively to build confidence."

The General Board of the Presbyterian Church urged all political parties to adopt a high degree of flexibility and urgency in preparation for elections and eventual negotiations.
