CIA chief Mr George Tenet, on a regional tour aimed at bolstering a fragile Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire, began talks today in Egypt with Egyptian President Mr Hosni Mubarak.

The talks began shortly after 7 a.m. in the presidential palace in northern Cairo. It was not immediately clear when Mr Tenet arrived here.

Mr Tenet was in the West Bank town of Ramallah last night to take part in the first meeting between Israeli and Palestinian security chiefs since Palestinian leader Mr Yasser Arafat ordered a ceasefire on June 2th.

The CIA chief kicked off his tour of the region in Cairo on Wednedsay, in an attempt to bolster a fragile truce between Palestinians and Israelis.

Israeli and Palestinian security chiefs will meet again tomorrow in Ramallah in the West Bank in the presence of US officials, a Palestinian official said.

The official said the sides would present their responses to propositions on ways out of the crisis offered by the Israeli, Palestinian and US delegations at yesterday's meeting.

"A second Israeli-Palestinian security meeting will take place tomorrow in the same place with American participation," the official said without specifying if Mr Tenet would attend as he did the first.
