CIE had set out to recover some of the £106,000 it had lost in fraud committed by a former employee, Dublin Circuit Court was told yesterday. Judge Michael White heard that Shirley Cummins, of Lorcan Green, Santry, Dublin, was awaiting sentence next November on 120 charges of fraud, following a guilty plea in the Circuit Criminal Court.

Ms Maura Whelan, for CIE, told Judge White that the company had wanted to restrain Allianz Church and General Insurance, where Cummins had worked after leaving CIE, from paying her £10,000 in settlement of a claim until further order of the court. However, CIE was now willing to accept an undertaking given on behalf of Allianz Church and General.

Cummins defrauded the company while she investigated and negotiated settlements on behalf of Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus.
