Plans by the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, to introduce competition to the Dublin bus market next year have been backed by the Construction Industry Federation.

Unions are currently engaged in a campaign against Mr Brennan's plans to break up CIÉ and open 25 per cent of the Dublin bus market to competition by private operators by next spring.

Their next protest action, following last month's "no fares day", is a half-day stoppage and demonstrations on August 19th.

The CIF says Mr Brennan should implement his plans and create a competitive environment for public transport.

This is necessary, it says, because of the "disappointing returns" to date from investment.

Little progress had been made towards increasing the public transport share of peak-time journeys, particularly in the greater Dublin area where congestion was greatest. "This is especially apparent in respect of Dublin Bus. Since 2000, Dublin Bus has acquired 412 new buses and now has nine quality bus corridors in operation, yet car-dependency has not declined significantly."
