Circus-owners settle name row

Rival circus-owners agreed yesterday to settle a legal dispute over the use of the word "Russian" in their billings.

Rival circus-owners agreed yesterday to settle a legal dispute over the use of the word "Russian" in their billings.

The International Russian Circus (IRC) had applied in the Northern Ireland High Court for an injunction to stop Courtney Brothers Circus, of Clondalkin, Dublin, and Castlederg, Co Tyrone, from trading as "The Russian Circus".

During Thursday's hearing, it was claimed the public had been misled into believing that "The Russian Circus" was the IRC. This was denied by Mr John Courtney who said there here at least six Russian theme circuses operating in Europe and it was nothing more than "healthy competition".

Mr Justice Campbell was to give judgment yesterday on the injunction application but was told by a barrister Mr Michael Stitt, for the IRC, that overnights talks had resulted in "an amicable settlement to the satisfaction of both sides".
