A civil servant rather than a politician is likely to be appointed by the Government to the board of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The London-based job commands a salary of £120,055 (about €180,000) net of tax.

The appointment for three years follows the retirement of former PD leader and minister Des O'Malley.

Although there has been speculation that the post might go to former Fianna Fáil minister and MEP Gerard Collins, Government sources say it is likely to go to a civil servant.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Tánaiste and PD leader Michael McDowell and Minister for Finance Brian Cowen are due to discuss the appointment.

Previous holders of the job include academic and former Fianna Fáil TD and senator Prof Brian Hillery.

The bank helps to channel investment to less developed European economies. It was established in 1990.
