The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, has asked for "early results" from the group established to oversee the modernisation of the civil service. At the first meeting yesterday of the new group charged with implementing the changes, Mr Ahern told senior civil servants it was time for the public and civil servants alike to see the results of modernisation "on the ground and to enjoy the benefits that will follow".

As a priority, he wished the group to oversee the delivery of early results "right across Government Departments" from the implementation of the agenda for public service modernisation.

Each Department must put the required "Quality Service Statement" in place by November 1st. This statement is designed to set standards for "an excellent service to the public".

According to Mr Ahern, the modernisation of the management of the public service is the only way to provide better government.
