Members of Louth County Council yesterday condemned comments by the Ulster Unionist leader, Mr David Trimble, alleging that the IRA's chief of staff lived in Dundalk and that recent IRA bombs had originated in the county.

Speaking at the council's monthly meeting in Dundalk, Mr Michael O'Donnell (FF) said "He Mr Trimble is either mad or mad drunk because no sober man would make that comment."

Cllr Jim Cousins (PD) said Mr Trimble should either "put up or shut up" while Mr Noel Lennon (FG) said the comments were inflammatory and better ignored.
