UP TO 100 workers at a company in Co Clare – a quarter of the entire workforce – are to lose their jobs. The remaining employees will have to take a 5 per cent cut in pay.
Molex, a 70-year-old global manufacturer of electronic, electrical and fibre optic interconnection systems, held a series of staff briefings at its Shannon facility yesterday. While the company has not confirmed how many jobs will be lost, sources say up to 100 workers will be let go.
Last January, the company’s Cork operation was centralised to Shannon and 80 jobs were lost.
In a statement last night Molex said it was “restructuring” and “reducing headcount and related employee costs in each of its divisions”. Molex said it would not “disclose any specific actions by location”.
Molex is based in Lisle, Illinois, and operates 45 locations in 17 countries. The Shannon operation was established in 1971. The company has a manufacturing facility and a sales office in Shannon where almost 400 are employed.
Clare county councillor Patricia McCarthy said she was concerned about the numbers who would lose their jobs and also about proposed changes in terms and conditions for remaining employees.
